In my personal opinion, Dynasty Warriors 8: Extreme Legends is the best modern mainline Dynasty Warrior game you can get for for yout money (excluding Spin-offs and games that use its engine). No Dynasty Warrior game is close to flawless, and I won't make any promise you will like it, but if you don't like this one, than the Dynasty Warrior series is certainly not for you. It's Dynasty Warriors, that divisive hack and slash game known for repetitious hacking and slashing among a sea of thousands of enemies and comically bad voice acting. Here, the combat has some variety and loads of bombast to make it satisfying when you complete the best combo or special attack for the moment.

The voice acting is significantly better than the days of Dynasty Warriors 3 - while not particularly great in any fashion it is servicable and alot less annoying or obviously and hilariously terrible so that the dialogue isn't an absolute pain or comedy fest to sit through. There's many modes of play in the game. Story lets you follow the campaign of one particular faction in its ambition to unify China under one rule or protect its land, loosely based on the time line of the Romance of Three Kingdoms novel. Each mission in Story mode allows you to choose a handful of officers in a battle, that vary in number (usually between 1-4) and choice from the Dynasty (a character from an early mission may not be in the later mission and vice versa). While this generally means you can't stick with just one officer, this allows you to get a feel for the different characters that may or may not work for you in this or other modes.

Go right ahead!), allowing the player to learn the level and mission structure and gain Xp, Currencies, and weapons. Ambition is a unique, long term, randomized, base building mode that ignores the history of the Three Kingdoms and instead allows you to choose a starting officer and engage in small battles to earn base resources and officers. There's another mode that feature various hi-score challenges such as defeating enemies within a time limit, or surviving by knocking enemies off bridges.

Some weapons are rather absurd, such as hand bombs thrown out in clusters that act as a melee weapon or a literal cloth used to whip enemies and has an attack that can juggle enemies. Players can choose two weapons from any type before battle. Weapons are ruled by a sort of Rock, Paper, Scissors style system called Heaven, Man, and Earth, where one type bests another, but is also bested by the other type. All weapons are available in all three types, so if you only want to use Zhao Yun's spear and nothing else, it will be available in any of those types as long as you find one.

If your weapon is bested by another officers weapon, you can still do damage to them, but you can't stagger them. If your weapon bests their's, then after doing enough damage, your officer will automatically perform a Storm Rush - flurry of fast and strong swipes that juggle in a moderately size area in front of you. Weapons can also have loads of properties such as elemental damage, dealing damaged when attack, or restoring health. In some previous games, if you lost in battle it was game over. Here, depending on the mission, dying may allow you to respawn, giving your side lower morale and pushing the enemy closer to their objective. It's a welcome change from the previous games when you were one-shot by an overpowered officer, killing all progress in your run.
